Today, a court hearing in Belgium will determine whether a survivor of domestic violence and her young daughter can remain in safety or face deportation to a country where their lives are at risk.
Marisol* and her daughter Aurora* fled Spain after enduring 13 years of coercive controlling behaviour and violence from Marisol’s ex-husband, a man deemed a “high risk” of committing “very serious or even lethal violence” against them. Despite Marisol having reported the abuse, Spain’s justice system have dismissed her claims, accusing her of manipulating her daughter’s testimony and using the discredited theory of Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS). With no protective measures available and fearing for Aurora’s safety, Marisol made the difficult decision to flea her home and seek refuge in Belgium for her and her daughter’s survival.
